Dan dalam pengunaannya beberapa fiber optik dijadikan satu dalam sebuah tempat yang dinamakan cabel optic, cable fiber optik digunakan untuk mengantarkan data digital yang berupa sinar dalam jarak yang sangat jauh.dengan mengunakan cable fiber optic lebih cepat untuk transfer data atau komonikasi, Perkembangan teknologi serat optik saat ini, telah dapat menghasilkan pelemahan ( attenuation) kurang dari 20 decibels ( dB) / km. Dengan lebar jalur ( bandwidth) yang besar sehingga kemampuan fiber optic dalam mentransmisikan data menjadi lebih banyak dan cepat dibandingan dengan penggunaan kabel konvensional. Dengan demikian serat optik sangat cocok digunakan terutama dalam aplikasi sistem telekomunikasi[ 2] . Pada prinsipnya serat optik memantulkan dan membiaskan sejumlah cahaya yang merambat didalamnya fiber optik.dalam satuan fiber optik di namakan core.
